- This exceptional interpretation of the national anthem is a compilation of songs and sounds of wildlife recorded in different ecosystems of the country by expert biologists.
- The Companies belonging to the SURA Business Group are committed to sustainability thanks to concrete actions being taken through their individual strategies and lines of business.
- Both SURA and Protección will participate in the COP16 Conference, providing opportunities to discuss academic, cultural and civic considerations regarding the joint responsibility of preserving nature.
With a deep commitment to sustainability and understanding that biodiversity is key to the well-being of individuals and the competitiveness of companies, SURA is now an official partner of COP16, the United Nations Conference on Biodiversity, which will take place beginning on October 21. The involvement of these companies belonging to our Business Group is consistent with their commitment to promote different lines of business as well as opportunities that preserve and regenerate nature, as well as to support initiatives that create value for society in both Colombia and the eight Latin American countries where we are present through Suramericana and SURA Asset Management.
On the occasion of this event of global relevance, SURA shall present a symbolic and significant milestone for the country: a so far unpublished version of the Colombian National Anthem, interpreted by a variety of sounds of nature and as a tribute to the natural wealth that is home to Colombia as the most biodiverse country in the world per square meter. This initiative honors, values and amplifies the crucial importance of biodiversity to Colombia and the world by bringing together the songs of birds and amphibians, the sounds of emblematic animals such as the jaguar, and the outstanding acoustics of ecosystems ranging from nature reserves in the Eastern Plains to the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.
To make this musical composition a reality, SURA relied on the talent of the renowned musician and producer Miguel de Narváez, who led the meticulous integration of the sounds of nature with the musical structure of the Colombian anthem. Likewise, biologists and biodiversity experts from different regions in Colombia played a fundamental role in selecting the species and locations to be recorded, thereby ensuring the authenticity of the piece and minimizing any impact on the ecosystems. These recordings employed sophisticated technology in order to accurately capture the richness and diversity of Colombian wildlife.
"Biodiversity, with its unique sounds that resonate with our National Anthem, forms a vital part of Colombia and the sustainable future we wish to build. COP16 is an opportunity to listen to those voices and to act, also from the private sector, in order to preserve these. When we say 'Make sure you Live', this goes beyond just our products and services, it is about protecting life in all of its forms," stated Juana Francisca Llano, Chief Executive Officer of Suramericana.
Also, during this year’s COP Conference, the meeting titled "Biodiversity and Business: Strategies for a Sustainable Future" will be held on October 31, organized by SURA and Protección in partnership with the Tropical Agriculture Research Center (CIAT in Spanish). Here we are striving to have an academic and business conversation with regard to how to preserve the environment, tethered to the development of society and all productive sectors. This shall be held at the CIAT headquarters (Km. 17 via Cali - Palmira) with transport being laid on from the Zona Verde of the COP Conference at 7:45 a.m. Those interested in signing up for this shuttle may register by clicking here.
Also, upholding its commitment to further artistic endeavors and inspire civic reflection and mobilization, the SURA Foundation is supporting the exhibition titled 'Espesuras. Inhabiting a wounded world', which will be held at the La Tertulia museum in Cali, from October 19 to March 2025, this being the result of an alliance between this museum and the Parque Explora museum in Medellin, in order to invite reflections on the relationship between culture and nature. The Foundation will also contribute to the care of the emblematic park, Parque del Perro, through volunteer activities on behalf of our employees and their families, this for the purpose of strengthening community ties and promoting sustainable practices.
Actions on the part of our SURA companies for furthering sustainability and preserving nature both in Colombia and throughout the region
Seguros SURA Colombia: has incorporated specific guidelines for incorporating biodiversity analysis criteria in all of its processes, offering its clients specialized services in environmental risk management, this initiative being recognized by the UNDP and Fasecolda for the Water Insurance proposal, together with the WWF, for the protection of this resource.
Protección: is furthering its comprehensive sustainable investment strategy, incorporating ESG criteria, in order to offer portfolios for its Colombian clients to invest in and obtain returns, this while contributing to the care of the planet. In fact, it has five voluntary savings portfolios with sustainable labeling that avoided the financing of 1,824 tons of CO2 emissions, between April 2023 and the same month in 2024. This equivalent to preventing the deforestation of 66 hectares of mature forest, this compared to a portfolio that does not include sustainability criteria. In this regard, Juan David Correa, Protección’s Chief Executive Officer, stated that: "we are striving to ensure that the financial performance of our clients' investments is just as important as the ESG aspects of such. Our commitment to sustainability goes beyond generating profitability since we aim to provide a tangible and positive impact on the world. Every sustainable investment we make reflects our commitment to a fairer more prosperous future for us all."
SURA Asset Management: its SURA Investments platform has integrated ESG criteria into its investment cycle while promoting initiatives relating to thematic investments, especially in Fixed Income, where it has increased its stake in sustainable labeled securities by more than 194% throughout the region, these covering green, social and sustainability-linked bonds. It also applies methodologies aligned with IFC performance standards with its infrastructure portfolio and is developing social and environmental risk management systems with regard to its private debt offering.
Suramericana: through its Geoscience and Trends/Risk Management Units as well as the SURA Empresas Entrepreneurial program, all this leveraged on the GeoSURA tool, has drilled down on their knowledge of nature as a source of risks and opportunities while identifying economic and social challenges that integrate social and planetary health as design criteria for business development throughout the region. It also participates in round table discussions such as those of the UNEP-FI (United Nations Environment Program Finance Initiative), which establishes best practices for managing financial risks associated with nature.
Grupo SURA: as an investment manager focusing on financial services, recognizes the importance of managing risks and opportunities relating to phenomena such as climate change and the loss of biodiversity. For this reason, it has incorporated environmental criteria in its capital allocation decisions, spearheading the identification of best practices for our SURA companies with respect to global sustainability standards while upholding sustainable investment guidelines for handling the portfolios managed by its subsidiaries Suramericana and SURA Asset Management.
With SURA's involvement in COP16, the creation of the Biodiversity Anthem and other actions, the Organization is demonstrating its commitment to protect the natural environment as an extension of life. It also reaffirms its role as a responsible actor in society in promoting academic and business conversations regarding environmental preservation in the face of social development and the growth of all productive sectors.
