Maria Mercedes Barrera Tobar
She is a business administrator from EAFIT University (Medellin, Colombia), with a specialization in Marketing from the same institution. She also completed the Global Entrepreneurship Leadership Symposium program at Berkeley University (California, United States) and became certified as a facilitator by the Kauffman Foundation in training programs for entrepreneurs.
Since June 2018, she has been serving as Corporate Citizenship Manager of Grupo SURA and Director of SURA Foundation in Colombia. In these roles, she leads the strategic direction of sustainability actions within the Business Group, as well as the implementation of the Foundation’s investment lines in education quality, cultural promotion, citizenship and democratic construction, and corporate volunteering.
Her experience has focused on the management of social organizations, business development programs, and the promotion of competitiveness. She has been involved in the development of inter-institutional alliances and the acquisition of co-financing resources. She possesses extensive knowledge in supporting processes for innovation, sustainable development, and the strengthening of entrepreneurial initiatives.
Between October 2016 and June 2018, she directed the Knowledge Unit Corporation, a think tank for senior management and leaders with high potential in companies associated with the Argos, Nutresa, Bancolombia, and SURA groups. Previously, she led the Ventures Corporation for six years, a non-profit organization that promotes high-impact entrepreneurship in Colombia, and worked as a consultant for the Entrepreneurship Center of the Bogotá Chamber of Commerce.
